El Nido, Palawan—Three (3) marine protected areas (MPAs) were inaugurated yesterday at Teneguiban’s covered court in El Nido, Palawan by the local government of El Nido, barangays San Fernando and Teneguiban and Malampaya Foundation Inc (MFI).

Of the three MPAs, one is newly-established while two were expanded:

1. Diapela (Bgy San Fernando) MPA: 286.6 hectares (new MPA)

2. San Fernando MPA: 1,709 hectares (expanded MPA from 10 hectares)

3. Teneguiban MPA: 1,400 hectares (expanded MPA from 10 hectares)

The MPA expansions and establishment are envisioned to improve the state of coastal ecosystems in the area through effective MPA management, enforcement and continuing partnership between the barangay and municipal LGUs and MFI.  San Fernando and Teneguiban have been partners of MFI in marine conservation since 2016.
