Pola, Oriental Mindoro –As part of its continuing commitment to community-based conservation and sustainable development, a water refilling enterprise was formally turned over to the coastal Barangay of Misong in Pola, Oriental Mindoro. The enterprise was entrusted to the Samahan ng Mangingisda at Magsasaka ng Barangay Misong (SMMBM), a long-standing conservation partner recognized for its dedication to marine resource protection and environmental stewardship.

Since 2016, SMMBM has worked closely with conservation stakeholders in the protection and management of the community’s Marine Protected Area (MPA). Through years of collective effort, the organization has contributed significantly to the recovery of fish populations, the improvement of coastal ecosystems, and the promotion of sustainable fisheries within their waters.

The group’s exemplary conservation initiatives earned them Third Place in the 2024 MPA STAR Awards in Oriental Mindoro, highlighting their effectiveness in advancing marine conservation at the local level.

Beyond MPA management, SMMBM has also demonstrated strong leadership in environmental protection and disaster response. During the 2023 oil spill crisis, the organization’s volunteer Bantay Dagat team played a crucial role in monitoring and safeguarding affected coastal areas. The group likewise continues to support the province-wide seasonal fishing closure observed annually from November 15 to January 15, a key measure aimed at protecting fish stocks and ensuring long-term fisheries sustainability.

The turnover of the water refilling enterprise serves as both a recognition of SMMBM’s outstanding conservation efforts and an investment in the community’s future. Designed to serve Barangay Misong and neighboring communities, the enterprise will provide an additional source of sustainable livelihood while contributing to local access to safe drinking water.

This initiative reflects the principle that successful conservation is strengthened when environmental protection is linked with tangible socio-economic benefits. By rewarding stewardship and empowering local organizations, the project demonstrates how conservation incentives can help build resilient communities while safeguarding vital natural resources for future generations.
