The foundation seeks to help communities become more self-sufficient in responding to emergencies and natural and man-made disasters through intensive trainings and exercises, to serve as volunteers in times of need.
Recently, MFI embarked on helping making roads safer through a community-based road safety program.
Teaching Safety and Resiliency in the Community
Malampaya Foundation’s Neighborhood Emergency Services Team (NEST) teaches in-land communities preparedness during times of emergencies and natural and man-made disasters. Communities are organized to plan for the prevention, mitigation and appropriate responses through trainings
in preparedness, fire protection, emergency
medical operations, search and rescue, emergency psychology, team organization, community protection, crowd control and emergency simulations. Assistance is also provided to the communities for the formation of barangay-based disaster response teams and organization of volunteers.
From 2007-2011, over 1,400 have been trained in communities in Batangas, Oriental Mindoro and Palawan, many of which have provided valuable volunteer emergency work in their respective localities.
Promoting Safer Roads
The World Health Organization cites that some 1.2 million lives are lost annually due to road-related accidents. Majority of these deaths occur in countries where road safety is not prioritized. In the Philippines, road incidents continue to increase rapidly due to recklessness and disregard for standards meant to safeguard the lives of all road users.
Kaligtasan sa Daan (KALSADA) is a community-based road safety program that helps promote
safer roads and defensive manner of driving through enforcement of traffic-related policies and road safety education of road-users and pedestrians. The aim is to contribute towards the reduction of incidents and accidents and improve the behavior of road users. This program is conducted in areas where Malampaya gas operations involve significant road transport.
